SUMMARY:Steve Suitts talk on "A War of Sections"
DESCRIPTION:Our favorite biographer of Justice Hugo Black took a break from working on volume number two to write A War of Sections: How Deep South Political Suppression Shaped Voting Rights in America. Steve Suitts was nothing if not thoughtful in the writing of this new work\, which is a sweeping reinterpretation of the history of disfranchisement. His penetrating analysis as presented in A War of Sections will galvanize your understanding of a complex history\, including how a century of political conflicts in Alabama came to shape both some of America’s best achievements in voting rights and its continuing struggles with voter suppression. His talk about the work happens on Thursday\, February 22 at 5:30pm.

SUMMARY:Reading of "They Must Be Women Now!" by Nora's Salon Playhouse South
DESCRIPTION:The NewSouth Bookstore and Nora’s Salon Playhouse South are pleased to co-host a reading of They Must Be Women Now! by Nedra Pezold Roberts\, directed by Jacqueline Allen Trimble\, on Monday\, February 12 at 7pm. Join us for this special event. The program is free but space is limited\, so please RSVP to reservations@norasplayhouse.org indicating the number of people in your party.\nNedra Pezold Roberts is an Atlanta-based dramatist. After several decades teaching English and drama she took early retirement to write her own plays rather than teach those of others. Her plays have had production runs and staged readings coast to coast and have won numerous awards.\nThey Must Be Women Now! is a contemporary take on Euripides’ Antigone. In the play\, a family of Southern women struggles to discern what needs to be buried\, to understand the difference between the impulse to hide from pain and the strength to lay that pain to rest. These women are shaped by their time\, their culture\, and their individual journeys. It falls to them to discover themselves — and become women now.

SUMMARY:Dr. Kirk Curnutt presents on the works of Zora Neale Hurston
DESCRIPTION:February gives us the chance to welcome Kirk Curnutt to The NewSouth Bookstore for a program we’re calling “10 Things Alabamians Should Know About Zora Neale Hurston.” Join the chair of Troy University’s English department for a countdown of the Top 10 Alabama-adjacent facts every literature lover should know about Zora Neale Hurston (1891—1960). You probably know ZNH as the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937)\, but there’s a lot more to this multidimensional writer\, folklorist\, journalist\, and anthropologist — including her deep ties to our very own state. SUMMARY:Howell Raines talk on "Silent Cavalry: How Union Soldiers from Alabama Helped Sherman Burn Atlanta – and THen Got Written Out of History"
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Howell Raines to our store for a program about his newest book\, Silent Cavalry: How Union Soldiers from Alabama Helped Sherman Burn Atlanta — and Then Got Written Out of History. Pulitzer Prize-winning Raines\, a born journalist and storyteller\, comes through with a whale of a tale\, one that shows how the writers of history do sometimes bend that history to their own biases. The book is epic. Michael Eric Dyson calls it “honest and brilliant storytelling at its best.” Mark your calendars for this exciting event on Sunday\, February 4 at 3pm.

SUMMARY:The NewSouth Bookstore hosting Ed George with Starlight and Other Stories
DESCRIPTION:Author Ed George closes out our 2023 bookstore events season with a reading and talk about his newest book\, Starlight and Other Stories. We know George as a poet (and artist/musician). SUMMARY:Reading of Thornton Wilder's The Long Christmas Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The best event of Montgomery’s 2023 holiday season may be our one-afternoon-only reading of The Long Christmas Dinner by Thornton Wilder\, which John Martello kindly agreed to take on as a project for The NewSouth Bookstore. The little-performed play\, short in running length\, showcases the lives of several generations of the Bayard family\, and some of their Christmas dinners\, over a period of nine decades. Wilder breaks the boundaries of time as we measure it\, and invites us to partake of “one long\, happy Christmas dinner” — past\, present and future. As generations appear\, have children\, wither and depart\, only the audience appreciates what changes and what remains the same. This is a masterpiece of twentieth-century theater — a little gem. The reading is directed by John Martello\, with Judith Broadway\, Rodney Clark\, Greta Lambert\, Maire Martello\, and Greg Thornton in the cast.

SUMMARY:Julie Williams with Wings of Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun National Aviation Month presentation with award-winning historian Julie Hedgepeth Williams. Her book Wings of Opportunity describes a lesser-known chapter of the Wright brothers’ history\, which began in 1910 when Wilbur and Orville moved to Montgomery\, Alabama to open our nation’s first civilian flight school. Says one reviewer of her book: “Dr. Williams is a masterful storyteller. In Wings of Opportunity\, Julie Williams vividly recreates the complex tale of civic pride\, two aviation pioneers who had little interest in public image\, local journalists who didn’t know what to make of them\, and the fascination of ordinary citizens with the amazing invention of flight.” Take-off is at 5:30pm on November 9!

SUMMARY:Part Two of Great 19th-Century Russian Writers talk with Dr. Lee Farrow
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lee Farrow returns to The NewSouth Bookstore for the second talk in a series about the great 19th-century Russian writers. She will continue discussing the theme of the “superfluous man” in Russian literature\, focusing on the works of Mikhail Lermontov\, Ivan Turgenev\, and Ivan Goncharov. These three authors portrayed the ideological and generational conflicts that were challenging Russian educated society\, fixing a critical eye on the hypocrisies and ineffectiveness of both the intellectuals of the “old guard” and the younger generation that would replace them.” As many of you have already discovered\, Farrow is a lively and knowledgeable presenter. SUMMARY:Dr. Lee Farrow Series on 19th-century Russian Writers Begins
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special three-part series on Russia’s great nineteenth-century writers led by Lee Farrow\, Chair of the Department of History and World Cultures at Auburn University at Montgomery. Farrow’s first program will be held Thursday\, September 7\, at 5:30pm. Her topic for the evening will be the work of Alexander Pushkin\, widely considered Russia’s greatest poet\, and his contemporary Nikolai Gogol\, who both critiqued Russian society and government through their writing\, the only way intellectuals could challenge the autocracy in a (relatively) safe manner. Pushkin\, in particular\, highlighted the impotency of Russia’s educated upper class and created the trope of the “superfluous man” that would dominate Russian literature for several decades. Three cheers to Steve Brickley\, whose request for “intellectually stimulating bookstore programming” led us to reach out to Lee Farrow. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Farrow for gifting us with this program. You won’t want to miss it.

Jefferson Cowie will be our guest on Wednesday\, August 16 at 5:30pm with his new Pulitzer Prize-winning book\, Freedom’s Dominion: A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power. In fact\, he’ll be in Alabama traveling with the Pulitzer Prize committee. Freedom’s Dominion is a magisterial work — “important\, deeply affecting\, and regrettably relevant” (NY Times) — which traces the long-running clash between white people and federal authority through the lens of Barbour County\, Alabama\, the ancestral home of political firebrand George Wallace. The New Republic calls Freedom’s Dominion “outstanding and urgent. A remarkable achievement.” Please join us in welcoming Professor Cowie for a talk about his powerful work of history.

SUMMARY:The NewSouth Bookstore hosting James R. Hansen!
DESCRIPTION:James Hansen joins us on Thursday\, July 20 at 5:30pm for the perfect summer book program connected with his new release\, Completely Mad. From the New York Times bestselling author of The First Man comes a sweeping saga involving two extraordinary—and extraordinarily different—adventurers who have only one thing in common: the ambition to cross the Atlantic in a rowboat . . . alone. In this bracing adventure tale\, the story of John Fairfax and Tom McClean are woven together for the first time. Fairfax would set off from the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa with his sights on Florida. McClean charted a course from Newfoundland to Ireland. Though the two men’s remarkable transoceanic journeys seem pulled from a different era\, both finished within days of the first landing on the moon in July 1969. With gripping and insightful prose\, James R. Hansen brings to life their nail-biting expeditions.

SUMMARY:Reading at NewSouth Books: Unmasking the Klansman: The Double Life of Asa and Forrest Carter
DESCRIPTION:The fascinating double identity of Asa Carter is a subject of Dan Carter’s newest book\, Unmasking the Klansman: The Double Life of Asa and Forrest Carter\, new from NewSouth Books. A distinguished Southern historian\, Dan Carter (no relation) has spent decades researching his subject\, who was a secret advisor to George Wallace in the 1960s and wrote his famous “Segregation now\, Segregation Forever” speech. Asa Carter disappeared from Alabama in the ‘70s and resurfaced as a Cherokee author in Abilene\, Texas\, writing under the name Forrest Carter. Curiously\, he went on to author the sensitively told The Education of Little Tree\, which became a bestseller. The unbelievable story Carter’s life and activities is conveyed with vigor and insight in Unmasking the Klansman. It practically guarantees that Dan Carter’s bookstore talk will be every bit as interesting.
