SUMMARY:Dominic Erdozain at The NewSouth Bookstore Thursday\, May 16 at 5:30pm!
DESCRIPTION:Historian Dominic Erdozain’s “brilliant and gut-wrenching” (NYTimes) takedown of American gun culture is a new book and the subject of the talk he will give at The NewSouth Bookstore on Thursday\, May 16 at 5:30pm. We are so fortunate to have Erdozain — a graduate of Oxford and Cambridge\, currently a visiting professor at Emory University — stop at the store with his newly released One Nation Under Guns: How Gun Culture Distorts Our History and Threatens Our Democracy\, which one critic says “goes wide and deep on the critical issues.” This is going to be a fascinating program. Don’t miss it.

SUMMARY:The NewSouth Bookstore celebrates Women's History Month with its first ever group read!
DESCRIPTION:March is Women’s History Month. This year\, we’re organizing our first bookstore group read — think of it as a one-time\, one-book book club — in recognition of it. Our selection for the group read is Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin. The work by Jill Lepore — American historian and journalist on faculty at Harvard University\, staff writer at The New Yorker\, and author of more than a dozen books — was published in 2013. It was a National Book Award finalist and New York Times Notable Book. It’s a tour-de-force that is simultaneously “a fascinating look at early America\, a meditation on one remarkable mind by another\, and\, implicitly\, a biography of all the other Janes—history’s anonymous and overlooked women” (New York Magazine). \nWith this post we are formally announcing the group read. We have a large stack of copies of the book at The NewSouth Bookstore awaiting purchase ($19). Those wishing to participate may take January through early April to read the book. We will gather for discussion in the bookstore on April 23 at 5:30pm. Sign-up is suggested: jessala.white@newsouthbookstore.com. All are invited\, irrespective of sex/gender. Thank you for considering this announcement your personal invitation to be part of what will be an exciting Women’s History Month event!

SUMMARY:Jennifer Horne at The NewSouth Bookstore on Tuesday\, April 16 at 5:30pm!
DESCRIPTION:The fascinating but troubled life of Montgomery’s own Sara Mayfield (1905—1979) emerges from the pages of a fine new biography by Jennifer Horne\, titled Odyssey of a Wandering Mind. We are lucky to have Horne — author and former Alabama state poet laureate — present on the topic at The NewSouth Bookstore on Tuesday\, April 16 at 5:30pm. Horne tracks Mayfield’s early life in Montgomery’s elite social circles\, her friendship with H.L. Mencken and others culturally prominent\, her lengthy confinement in Bryce Hospital for the Insane\, and her writing career. It’s a book as rich and interesting as Mayfield’s life was rich and interesting. At The NewSouth Bookstore in April.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Patricia Foster on Thursday\, April 11 at 5:30pm. In Written in the Sky: Lessons of a Southern Daughter\, Foster presents a double portrait of place and family\, a book of deeply personal essays that interrogate the legacy of racial tensions in the South\, the constriction of caste and gender\, and the ways race\, class\, and white privilege are entwined in her family story. Foster is gaining well-deserved recognition for her talents as a writer with this new book. Come meet her and enjoy her talk about it. \n

SUMMARY:Trish O'Kane talk with "Birding to Change the World"
DESCRIPTION:The NewSouth Bookstore welcomes Trish O’Kane back to Montgomery for a talk about her new book\, Birding to Change the World\, on Thursday\, March 28 at 5:30pm. O’Kane claims she’s an accidental ornithologist. In her nearly two decades spent as an investigative journalist she never paid much attention to nature. Hurricane Katrina changed all that. To read her book is to gain a special perspective on the natural world and one’s relationship with it. It’s a warm and compelling weave of science and social engagement. About the book Bill McKibben comments\, “Not just a delightful story but a powerful one\, showing how we can open doors into the natural world\, and hence into the fight to defend it. Birds as teachers — a wonderful idea!”

SUMMARY:Frye Gaillard Talk with "A Hard Rain"
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to bring Frye Gaillard\, dear friend and author many times published by NewSouth Books\, to The NewSouth Bookstore for a talk about A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s\, on the release of its paperback edition. Join us for this special event on Thursday\, March 21 at 5:30pm. Gaillard is a talented journalist and author with over thirty published books. His A Hard Rain is considered by many to be his masterwork. The book seamlessly blends history and memoir as he vividly recalls the many historic events that made the decade so tumultuous\, so significant\, so memorable. There is no better guide to it than Frye Gaillard. His book is “essential reading” (Howell Raines).

SUMMARY:Join Historian Ann Boutwell for a presentation on the life of Daniel Pratt
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 14 at 5:30pm\, historian Ann Boutwell\, board member of the Autauga County Heritage Association\, presents on her absolutely favorite subject\, the life of Daniel Pratt. Pratt’s name is familiar to many\, but few know the scope of his achievements\, which include founding of the town of Prattville; the development of not one but several mill businesses there and elsewhere; his advocacy for the introduction of industry in our state; his hiring of Black and White millworkers and for being among the first to provide schools and churches for millworker families; and his philanthropy\, especially during the hard years following the Civil War. Pratt’s achievements are described in two books we have for sale: Honorable Daniel Pratt: A Biography\, with Eulogies on His Life and Character\, edited by Mrs. S.F. Tarrant (1904)\, and The World of Daniel Pratt: Essays on Industry\, Politics\, Art\, Architecture\, Reform\, and Town-Building in Alabama\, edited by Curt J. Evans and with essays by other Alabama historians (1999). \nBOOKSTORE EVENT BONUS! Ann Boutwell will lead a tour of the Prattville mill complex for a group from The NewSouth Bookstore sometime in late March (date to be announced shortly). The tour is limited to 25 and is free of charge. Sign up in store or via email to Jessala at jessala.white@newsouthbookstore.com. Watch this newsletter for further details.

SUMMARY:Read Freely Alabama letter-writing campaign at The NewSouth Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Come by The NewSouth Bookstore on Friday\, March 1 from 4pm to 7pm when we’ll gather with representatives from Read Freely Alabama for a community letter-writing campaign. We have a ninety-day window in which to communicate with our State of Alabama legislators and help them understand our perspective on challenges to our public libraries\, challenges which restrict access to books and hamper the work of our excellent public librarians charged with stewarding this most important of our nation’s public institutions. These challenges impact your rights as tax-paying citizens. Let our legislators hear your voice!

SUMMARY:Steve Suitts talk on "A War of Sections"
DESCRIPTION:Our favorite biographer of Justice Hugo Black took a break from working on volume number two to write A War of Sections: How Deep South Political Suppression Shaped Voting Rights in America. Steve Suitts was nothing if not thoughtful in the writing of this new work\, which is a sweeping reinterpretation of the history of disfranchisement. His penetrating analysis as presented in A War of Sections will galvanize your understanding of a complex history\, including how a century of political conflicts in Alabama came to shape both some of America’s best achievements in voting rights and its continuing struggles with voter suppression. His talk about the work happens on Thursday\, February 22 at 5:30pm.

SUMMARY:Reading of "They Must Be Women Now!" by Nora's Salon Playhouse South
DESCRIPTION:The NewSouth Bookstore and Nora’s Salon Playhouse South are pleased to co-host a reading of They Must Be Women Now! by Nedra Pezold Roberts\, directed by Jacqueline Allen Trimble\, on Monday\, February 12 at 7pm. Join us for this special event. The program is free but space is limited\, so please RSVP to reservations@norasplayhouse.org indicating the number of people in your party.\nNedra Pezold Roberts is an Atlanta-based dramatist. After several decades teaching English and drama she took early retirement to write her own plays rather than teach those of others. Her plays have had production runs and staged readings coast to coast and have won numerous awards.\nThey Must Be Women Now! is a contemporary take on Euripides’ Antigone. In the play\, a family of Southern women struggles to discern what needs to be buried\, to understand the difference between the impulse to hide from pain and the strength to lay that pain to rest. These women are shaped by their time\, their culture\, and their individual journeys. It falls to them to discover themselves — and become women now.

SUMMARY:Dr. Kirk Curnutt presents on the works of Zora Neale Hurston
DESCRIPTION:February gives us the chance to welcome Kirk Curnutt to The NewSouth Bookstore for a program we’re calling “10 Things Alabamians Should Know About Zora Neale Hurston.” Join the chair of Troy University’s English department for a countdown of the Top 10 Alabama-adjacent facts every literature lover should know about Zora Neale Hurston (1891—1960). You probably know ZNH as the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937)\, but there’s a lot more to this multidimensional writer\, folklorist\, journalist\, and anthropologist — including her deep ties to our very own state. Dr. Curnutt’s scholarship in the area guarantees his will be a rich and illuminating talk.

SUMMARY:Howell Raines talk on "Silent Cavalry: How Union Soldiers from Alabama Helped Sherman Burn Atlanta – and THen Got Written Out of History"
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Howell Raines to our store for a program about his newest book\, Silent Cavalry: How Union Soldiers from Alabama Helped Sherman Burn Atlanta — and Then Got Written Out of History. Pulitzer Prize-winning Raines\, a born journalist and storyteller\, comes through with a whale of a tale\, one that shows how the writers of history do sometimes bend that history to their own biases. The book is epic. Michael Eric Dyson calls it “honest and brilliant storytelling at its best.” Mark your calendars for this exciting event on Sunday\, February 4 at 3pm.

SUMMARY:Reading of Thornton Wilder's The Long Christmas Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The best event of Montgomery’s 2023 holiday season may be our one-afternoon-only reading of The Long Christmas Dinner by Thornton Wilder\, which John Martello kindly agreed to take on as a project for The NewSouth Bookstore. The little-performed play\, short in running length\, showcases the lives of several generations of the Bayard family\, and some of their Christmas dinners\, over a period of nine decades. Wilder breaks the boundaries of time as we measure it\, and invites us to partake of “one long\, happy Christmas dinner” — past\, present and future. As generations appear\, have children\, wither and depart\, only the audience appreciates what changes and what remains the same. This is a masterpiece of twentieth-century theater — a little gem. The reading is directed by John Martello\, with Judith Broadway\, Rodney Clark\, Greta Lambert\, Maire Martello\, and Greg Thornton in the cast.

SUMMARY:Julie Williams with Wings of Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun National Aviation Month presentation with award-winning historian Julie Hedgepeth Williams. Her book Wings of Opportunity describes a lesser-known chapter of the Wright brothers’ history\, which began in 1910 when Wilbur and Orville moved to Montgomery\, Alabama to open our nation’s first civilian flight school. Says one reviewer of her book: “Dr. Williams is a masterful storyteller. In Wings of Opportunity\, Julie Williams vividly recreates the complex tale of civic pride\, two aviation pioneers who had little interest in public image\, local journalists who didn’t know what to make of them\, and the fascination of ordinary citizens with the amazing invention of flight.” Take-off is at 5:30pm on November 9!

SUMMARY:Part Two of Great 19th-Century Russian Writers talk with Dr. Lee Farrow
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lee Farrow returns to The NewSouth Bookstore for the second talk in a series about the great 19th-century Russian writers. She will continue discussing the theme of the “superfluous man” in Russian literature\, focusing on the works of Mikhail Lermontov\, Ivan Turgenev\, and Ivan Goncharov. These three authors portrayed the ideological and generational conflicts that were challenging Russian educated society\, fixing a critical eye on the hypocrisies and ineffectiveness of both the intellectuals of the “old guard” and the younger generation that would replace them.” As many of you have already discovered\, Farrow is a lively and knowledgeable presenter.
