SUMMARY:Sunday\, October 13 at 3pm at The NewSouth Bookstore Madiba K. Dennie presents on The Originalism Trap
DESCRIPTION:Madiba K. Dennie is our special guest at The NewSouth Bookstore on Sunday\, October 13\, at 3pm. Her magnificent book\, The Originalism Trap: How Extremists Stole the Constitution and How We the People Can Take It Back\, offers a devastating critique of the way in which conservatives on the Roberts court have used originalism as an all-out attack on civil rights and social progress\, thus undermining the full potential of our U.S. Constitution. Dennie is a legal scholar\, whose commentary has been featured in The Atlantic and The Washington Post\, on MSNBC\, and elsewhere; she is deputy editor and senior contributor for Balls and Strikes. Come hear her talk about her new book and the issues it critically addresses.

DESCRIPTION:John Turner\, a journalist by training\, has a long relationship with the Appalachian Trail\, which includes being a Trail Ambassador and member of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club board of directors. But it’s his walking of the trail that is the subject of his beguiling book\, which follows his personal journey on its pathways in search of inner peace. Killing the Buddha on the Appalachian Trail is the chronicle of what it taught him about life\, about aging and learning from one’s mistakes. Come meet him and hear his remarkable yet very human story on Tuesday\, October 8 at 5:30pm.

SUMMARY:Tuesday\, September 17 at 5:30pm at The NewSouth Bookstore: Jim Morris\, author of The Cancer Factory
DESCRIPTION:Environmental journalist Jim Morris joins us for a talk about his highly praised new book\, The Cancer Factory. The story concerns a group of Goodyear Tire and Rubber workers who were exposed to toxic chemicals\, the lawyer who sought justice on their behalf\, and the shameful lack of protection our society affords all workers. SUMMARY:Deborah Jackson Taffa at The NewSouth Bookstore Thursday\, June 20 at 5:30pm!
DESCRIPTION:The reviews in for Deborah Taffa’s new memoir are many and starred\, and include praise from Oprah and the New York Times. Whiskey Tender is a Native American story which is unexpected and propulsive\, indeed tender\, but also bold and beautifully told. It’s a memoir of family and survival\, coming of age on and off the reservation\, and of the frictions between mainstream American culture and Native identity. A fascinating work\, full of humanity\, and a fascinating story\, which luckily Taffa will join us at the bookstore to tell. Mark your calendars to be with us on Thursday\, June 20 at 5:30pm.

SUMMARY:The NewSouth Bookstore celebrates Women's History Month with its first ever group read!
DESCRIPTION:March is Women’s History Month. This year\, we’re organizing our first bookstore group read — think of it as a one-time\, one-book book club — in recognition of it. Our selection for the group read is Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin. The work by Jill Lepore — American historian and journalist on faculty at Harvard University\, staff writer at The New Yorker\, and author of more than a dozen books — was published in 2013. It was a National Book Award finalist and New York Times Notable Book. It’s a tour-de-force that is simultaneously “a fascinating look at early America\, a meditation on one remarkable mind by another\, and\, implicitly\, a biography of all the other Janes—history’s anonymous and overlooked women” (New York Magazine). \nWith this post we are formally announcing the group read. We have a large stack of copies of the book at The NewSouth Bookstore awaiting purchase ($19). Those wishing to participate may take January through early April to read the book. We will gather for discussion in the bookstore on April 23 at 5:30pm. Sign-up is suggested: jessala.white@newsouthbookstore.com. All are invited\, irrespective of sex/gender. Thank you for considering this announcement your personal invitation to be part of what will be an exciting Women’s History Month event!

SUMMARY:Jennifer Horne at The NewSouth Bookstore on Tuesday\, April 16 at 5:30pm!
DESCRIPTION:The fascinating but troubled life of Montgomery’s own Sara Mayfield (1905—1979) emerges from the pages of a fine new biography by Jennifer Horne\, titled Odyssey of a Wandering Mind. We are lucky to have Horne — author and former Alabama state poet laureate — present on the topic at The NewSouth Bookstore on Tuesday\, April 16 at 5:30pm. Horne tracks Mayfield’s early life in Montgomery’s elite social circles\, her friendship with H.L. Mencken and others culturally prominent\, her lengthy confinement in Bryce Hospital for the Insane\, and her writing career. It’s a book as rich and interesting as Mayfield’s life was rich and interesting. At The NewSouth Bookstore in April.

SUMMARY:Trish O'Kane talk with "Birding to Change the World"
DESCRIPTION:The NewSouth Bookstore welcomes Trish O’Kane back to Montgomery for a talk about her new book\, Birding to Change the World\, on Thursday\, March 28 at 5:30pm. O’Kane claims she’s an accidental ornithologist. In her nearly two decades spent as an investigative journalist she never paid much attention to nature. Hurricane Katrina changed all that. To read her book is to gain a special perspective on the natural world and one’s relationship with it. It’s a warm and compelling weave of science and social engagement. About the book Bill McKibben comments\, “Not just a delightful story but a powerful one\, showing how we can open doors into the natural world\, and hence into the fight to defend it. Birds as teachers — a wonderful idea!”
