SUMMARY:An Evening with Author Caleb Tankersley
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Thursday\, April 10\, as we welcome award winning fiction writer Caleb Tankersley to the Auburn University at Montgomery campus. Dr. Tankersley will give a public reading at 5:30 (in Taylor Center 221)\, where he will also discuss his writing process\, the craft of creative writing\, and his work in the publishing industry. Dr. Tankersley holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi in creative writing. He is an assistant professor of English and creative writing at St. John’s University and the managing director of Split/Lip Press. He is the author of two collections of short fiction: Sin Eaters (University of Alaska Press\, 2023) and Jesus Works the Night Shift (Cities of the Straits\, 2014). His work has appeared in The Cimarron Review\, Hayden’s Ferry Review\, The Tuskegee Review\, and many other journals\, including AUM’s own Thirteen Bridges Review. He is the winner of the Permafrost Fiction Prize\, and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

DESCRIPTION:Alabama Poet Laureate Ashley Jones will discuss creativity and empathy during an open public session hosted by AUM’s Civil Rights & Civic Virtue Society as part of the May 8-9 “Out of the Box: Workshop on Teaching and Learning.”\n\n\nMembers of the campus community are invited to attend Jones’ presentation\, “Imagine Us In Love With The World: How Poetry and Empathy Can Save Us All\,” on Wednesday\, May 8\, at 4:30 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 109.\n\n\nJones\, who serves as associate director of UAB’s Honors Program\, received a Poet Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets in 2022. She is the founding director of the Magic City Poetry Festival and a board member of the Alabama Writers Cooperative and the Alabama Writers Forum.\n\n\nHer debut poetry collection\, “Magic City Gospel\,” was published by Hub City Press in 2017 and earned a silver medal in poetry at the 2017 Independent Publishers Book Awards.
