DESCRIPTION:The annual Auburn Witness Poetry Prize honoring Jake Adam York will be open May 1 – June 1. Submit up to 3 poems for this year’s judge\, Joy Harjo! Entry fee of $15. Winner receives $1\,000 and a chance to read at an event in Auburn\, AL. \nPresented in October by the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University\, the Auburn Witness Poetry Prize event features the recipient and judge in conversation at the museum and includes a workshop. The recipient also receives travel expenses to attend the event. \nJoy Harjo is an internationally renowned performer and writer of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. She served three terms as the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States from 2019-2022 and is winner of Yale’s 2023 Bollingen Prize for American Poetry.

SUMMARY:ILS / Fence 2023 Fiction and Poetry Contest Now Live!
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to submit your writing for a chance to be published in Fence\, one of North America’s most prestigious literary magazines\, and be awarded a full scholarship to attend the December 2023 International Literary Seminars program in Kenya. The ILS program is a unique and intensive series of literary workshops\, career consultations\, and cultural offerings in Nairobi and Lamu\, Kenya. All entries will be considered for publication in Fence or Fence Digital\, and a chance to receive editorial feedback. \nThe first-prize winner will have their winning work published in Fence and will be awarded a full scholarship\, including tuition\, accommodations\, and an airfare stipend\, to attend the December 2023 International Literary Seminars program in Kenya. \nThe second-prize winner will have their work published in Fence\, and be offered a full tuition fee waiver to attend the December 2023 International Literary Seminars program in Kenya. \nThe third-prize winner will be offered 50% off the tuition fee. Runners-up will be awarded partial fellowships to attend the program. \nSubmit previously unpublished fiction manuscripts of 6\,000 words or less\, or up to three poems\, per entry. Multiple entries may be submitted. Simultaneous submissions are allowed\, but please notify us immediately if your work gets accepted elsewhere. The contest will run until August 25\, 2023 (11:59 p.m EST). The winners will be announced in September 2023.\nSince entries are read blind\, please leave off identifying information in your submission and file name. Submissions capped at 1\,000. \nOur low entry fee of $19 USD helps cover costs for running ILS\, a not-for-profit organization.

The NewSouth Bookstore is proud to host author Jonathan Eig for a talk about the book\, this being his only Montgomery appearance. The program is scheduled for Thursday\, June 8 at 5:30pm. For reasons of expected attendance this event will be held at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Legacy Center\, located directly behind the church\, at 455 Washington Ave.\, Montgomery\, Alabama. Please make note. King: A Life is the first definitive biography about Martin Luther King Jr. in decades. The New York Times\, Washington Post\, NPR\, and others have named it in their most anticipated books of 2023 list. About the work Ken Burns says\, “Eig has pulled off a kind of miracle. June 27th\, 2023\, 5pm (PST) \nThree Fellowship Awards for LGBTQIA+ Writers & Filmmakers \nYou can apply via the application on our website: \nWriters Boot Camp Fellowship Application. \nWriters Boot Camp continues our support of fresh voices and diverse artists this month by providing three $2500 full scholarships to writers in the Saturday\, July 8th 10-Week Basic Training. \nIn celebration of Pride this month’s theme is LGBTQIA+ Contributions. \nCandidates must self-identify as LGBTQIA+ and submit a project focusing on at least one Main Character presenting within that background and involved in a story with related subject matter. \nWhether writing about personal challenges\, about a relationship or family circumstance\, an historical retrospective or modern take on past events\, a leadership or political issues piece\, or a simply entertaining and engaging project–all formats and genres of TV\, movies\, books\, novels\, and non-fiction can be supported and are welcome. \nWhile in many cases\, audiences can benefit from authentic representation of any kind\, especially in the realm of LGBTQIA+ inclusion\, we encourage all writers to consider how a project idea offers a fresh take and contribution to the “ongoing conversation” to rise above cliche or a more generic approach. Of course\, that’s the key to any idea in the entertainment industry\, which is an idea business. \nOur tools are agnostic in that there is no imposition of bias\, and Writers Boot Camp’s diversity track record through the years is unparalleled. You can read more about the process at writersbootcamp.com and the fellowship application page. \nWriters must verify their availability to write 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the Basic Training process that has supported more than 12\,000 writers and filmmakers over the past 34 years. \nWe encourage all applicants to read about the professional approach in all of Writers Boot Camp’s educational support\, as well as distinctions that have made the learning and productivity environment of our writing groups and individual artists successful through the years. \nWe discourage applying if there’s any risk that winning could prevent another deserving writer from our support in the case that you might drop or not take full advantage of the award after winning. \nWhile we celebrate our anniversary each October\, the first session conducted by founder Jeffrey Gordon (JG ) was in his living room in March 1989 during his last semester of his MFA at USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program.
