Fight On!! \nThursday\, 5/18\, 4-5pm\, LA Time \nMini-Camp: Free Script Evaluation \nTools to Make Your Best Script Stronger \nwith Founder Jeffrey Gordon \nWe invite you to enjoy a free Mini-Camp with Writers Boot Camp Founder Jeffrey Gordon on the topic of…Free Script Evaluation. We’ll review the most Common First Draft Problems\, and deploy a checklist of tools and tests to help free you from the need for outside script evaluation\, which will also pre-empt the tendency to rush your material out to market. \nWhile Writers Boot Camp’s unique support includes script evaluation and conferencing as part of the 10-Week Basic Training and all levels of Professional Membership\, there are certain threshold creative issues that newer writers will benefit from understanding about the nature of early stages of writing and project development. After all\, screenwriting is a profession–and while many ideas do spring forth from one’s personal life\, the curation of entertainment is a craft. \nLinked to our mission of dispelling fallacies to accelerate careers is the philosophy of freeing our alumni from insecurity about their own work and the unwitting abdication of creative authority. While it can be very natural to lose objectivity about one’s work from the outset and during various stages of rewriting\, Writers Boot Camp provides tools for artist empowerment and methods of breaking down the work into more manageable exercises and stages\, especially during rewriting. \nMany respectable and respected colleagues run companies offering script evaluation services\, though we don’t abide or encourage the need for writers to pay extra for script evaluation. Our Professional Membership offers the free\, ongoing benefit of script evaluation\, along with a constructively directed reinforcement of a method to gradually wean writers off that dependency. \nOf course\, an earnest and capable practitioner may offer insight that can be justified for the few hundred bucks. But the general lack of experience and education by new writers can render the most insightful commentary superfluous to a writer’s current capacity to integrate notes\, let alone at the right stage of the writing and rewriting process. More profoundly\, a writer is the presumed expert of their material\, so it’s not great form. \nThe insight of a veteran executive or producer who’s willing to take time to be supportive with insight about commercial viability and creative notes can be perceived as a golden ticket. Too often\, however\, screenwriters impose on their friends in the business by submitting early drafts of scripts that are premature to evaluate–unless the ultimate bottom line is whether the idea has merit in the first place and\, in that case\, why impose at all? \nThe comments of the best facilitator can be lost by the inevitable need for multiple drafts\, as well as negated by the editorial stance of an executive and their company’s business model. \nThat’s why we teach tools for development and why our Professional Members learn dozens of unique rewriting exercises\, as well as development tools applicable to the many stages it takes for your script to merit submission. \nYou can email jg@writersbootcamp.com with questions about the next 10-Week Basic Training or the benefits of Pro Membership. \nWe always appreciate hearing personal news and breakthroughs\, and recent film and TV credits\, as well as achievements in book publishing by alumni.

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to submit your writing for a chance to be published in Fence\, one of North America’s most prestigious literary magazines\, and be awarded a full scholarship to attend the December 2023 International Literary Seminars program in Kenya. The ILS program is a unique and intensive series of literary workshops\, career consultations\, and cultural offerings in Nairobi and Lamu\, Kenya. All entries will be considered for publication in Fence or Fence Digital\, and a chance to receive editorial feedback. \nThe first-prize winner will have their winning work published in Fence and will be awarded a full scholarship\, including tuition\, accommodations\, and an airfare stipend\, to attend the December 2023 International Literary Seminars program in Kenya. \nThe second-prize winner will have their work published in Fence\, and be offered a full tuition fee waiver to attend the December 2023 International Literary Seminars program in Kenya. \nThe third-prize winner will be offered 50% off the tuition fee. DESCRIPTION:The annual Clifford and Virginia Durr Lecture brings Martha Prescod Norman Noonan to Montgomery. She lectures on her book\, Hands on the Freedom Plow\, at ASU’s Ralph D. Abernathy Hall Auditorium on Friday\, April 28 at 4:30pm. A remarkable woman\, Norman Noonan left her Detroit home in 1963 to help register voters as a SNCC volunteer in the South. Testimonies about her contributions and those of fifty plus other women — young\, old\, Black and White — are gathered in the book. The NewSouth Bookstore will be on site at the program selling copies of the book\, which are available for signing.

DESCRIPTION:Huntingdon College will welcome civil rights historian Dr. Timothy Tyson\, senior research scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and adjunct professor of American studies at the University of North Carolina\, as the lecturer for the College’s Ellison-Chapman Benson Symposium\, Thursday\, April 13\, 6:00–7:00 p.m.\, in the College’s Delchamps Recital Hall\, Smith Music Building. Dr. Tyson is the author of multiple award-winning books\, including “Blood Done Sign My Name\,” a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist\, and “The Blood of Emmett Till\,” a National Book Award longlist book. A book-signing will follow the lecture with books available for purchase\, cash or check only. The event is open to the public. \nDr. Tyson was executive producer of Mike Wiley’s 2008 play and writer-consultant for Jeb Stuart’s 2010 feature film adaptation of “Blood Done Sign My Name.” His 1999 book\, “Radio Free Dixie: Robert F. Williams and the Roots of Black Power\,” won the James Rawley Prize and the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize from the Organization of American Historians (OAH) and was the basis for “Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power\,” to which the OAH awarded the 2006 Eric Barnou Prize for best historical film. Dr. Tyson is co-editor with David Cecelski of “Democracy Betrayed: The Wilmington Race Riot of 1898 and Its Legacy\,” winner of the 1998 Outstanding Book Award from the Gustavus Meyers Center for Human Rights in North America; and author of “Ghosts of 1898: Wilmington’s Race Riot and the Rise of White Supremacy\,” winner of the 2007 Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists. He serves on the executive board of the North Carolina NAACP\, Repairers of the Breach\, and the UNC Center for Civil Rights. \nParking for the lecture will be available in the Smith Parking Lot\, accessible from East Fairview Avenue adjacent to Neal Posey Baseball Field.

DESCRIPTION:Nick Tabor joins us at The NewSouth Bookstore to discuss his new book\, Africatown: America’s Last Slave Ship and the Community It Created. The story focuses on the community founded by enslaved people carried to the Gulf Coast by the Clotilda\, the remains of which were recently discovered. That community was rooted in slavery\, but its people refused to let that be their only identity. In Africatown Yoruba was spoken\, and its residents appointed their own leaders. Today\, those living there battle the effects of pollution from surrounding industry and land developers. Tabor tells an evocative story about an inspirational history tied to this place.

DESCRIPTION:Honoring Women’s History\, Writers Boot Camp will award three deserving writers full $2500 scholarships for the Tuesday\, April 18th \n10-Week Basic Training. The fellowship category is the second annual\, as well as another effort to support female-focused stories and women’s voices\, which we highlighted even more since the 2020 pandemic. \nConducted by founder Jeffrey Gordon\, Basic Training will take each writer from idea through a first draft and two rewrites of a TV pilot or movie script–or the foundation of a book or novel–while imparting writing fundamentals. The only prerequisite for eligibility is the availability of 10 hours per week for creative exercises and writing. \nThe short application for this fellowship is free and highlights a few topical questions for writers to articulate personal perspectives and individual experiences of women writers and filmmakers. The expectation for stories is not that they are based on one’s own life but how one’s perspective provides engaging insight. \nApplications will be followed prior to the deadline by a staff member to verify your availability for 10 hours per week to fully participate in Basic Training if selected as a winner. \nWriters Boot Camp has a remarkable track record in support of diverse voices\, including women. DESCRIPTION:The Alabama Writers’ Cooperative will present online workshops –“Freelancing Your Way to a Paycheck” and “How to Avoid the Slushpile and Land an Agent” by Karim Shamsi-Basha via Zoom on March 25 from 10 a.m. till noon. \nSince its inception in 1923\, at what is currently the University of Montevallo\, the A.W.C. has worked to foster\, inspire and promote all types of writing in Alabama. This will be the first of a series of events to celebrate the organization’s 100th anniversary. The events will culminate with an in-person conference Sept. 8-10 at the O’Neal Library in Mountain Brook\, AL\, outside Birmingham. \nThe upcoming freelance class will provide insights on how to write better story pitches as a freelancer and explore different markets for content. The class will be hosted by Karim Shamsi-Basha\, who works as a freelance journalist\, photographer\, and author. He is also a full-time food and culture columnist with NJ.com. \nShamsi-Basha will also teach a workshop about query letters during the Zoom session. He’ll share the query letter that helped him get his agent\, and talk about the elements that grab agents’ attention. \nIn 2021\, “The Cat Man of Aleppo” was awarded a Caldecott Honor as one of the top children’s’ books of that year – Basha co-authored it with Irene Latham\, with illustrations created by Yuko Shimizu. Basha referred to the book as “one of my all-time greatest achievements.” \nHis freelance work has appeared in a wide variety of publications from “Sports Illustrated” to the “Washington Post.” \nShamsi-Basha\, who immigrated to the U.S. from Syria in 1984\, writes full-time as the culture and food columnist for NJ.com and “The Star Ledger” out of New Jersey. The freelance portion will explore “effectively pitching magazines\, publications and websites\,” he said. \nA.W.C. President Jessica Langston said this workshop “should give prospective freelancers some valuable insights to help them in their pursuit of landing writing jobs. It will also help the many writers out there who are hoping to secure agents to get their manuscripts published. We are very pleased to have Karim offering his wealth of knowledge and expertise on both these subjects.” \nThe workshops will be held on Saturday\, March 25 from 10 a.m. to noon.
