SUMMARY:Asian American Pacific Islander Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Tell Us About AAPI Contributions to American Life \nApply by Tues. May 16th\, 2023\, 5pm (PST) \nThree Fellowship Awards for AAPI Writers & Filmmakers \nYou can apply via the application on our website: Writers Boot Camp AAPI Fellowship Application. \nWriters Boot Camp continues our support of fresh voices this month by providing three $2500 full scholarships to writers in the Thursday\, May 25th Basic Training. \nCandidates must verify their availabity to write 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the Basic Training process that has supported more than 12\,000 writers and filmmakers over the past 33 years. While we celebrate our anniversary each October\, the first session conducted by JG was in his living room in March 1989 during his last semester of his MFA at USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program. \nThis month’s theme of “AAPI Contributions III” is our third offering in this category of creative material that supports the voices of artists\, writers\, and filmmakers with Asian American Pacific Islander heritage. \nWhether you’re writing a family story\, one about an unheralded individual in leadership or American history\, a genre with specific thematic significance\, or profound change and artistic achievement of AAPI people and subjects–this theme’s creative parameters are otherwise unlimited. The only project requirements are AAPI lead characters and subject matter. \nPertinent professional experience combined with cogent answers will complement the project idea to determine the three winners. \nEligibility Notes \nWriters Boot Camp alumni who have applied to a prior fellowship within the past six months–or who have won before–may apply for fun yet are not eligible to win. Winners must confirm their availability to participate in Basic Training\, along with 10 hours per week for creative exercises and writing for 10 weeks without risk of dropping due to outside conflict or work opportunities. Only winners will be notified individually. All non-winners will be notified by email within a few days of the selection of winners. \nOur Remarkable Track Record and Diversity Emphasis \nThere are few places in society for artists to seek and receive personal support. No one does what we do and with as much depth of process. Writers Boot Camp’s tools are meant to empower your own authority. The tools and materials are more a language for collaboration and for describing your creative goals than a formula to fit your story. \nWriters Boot Camp’s remarkable success of supporting diversity and a range of creative voices is unparalleled in the business. Over the nine years Fox Diversity sponsored writers through Basic Training\, 50% of the writers attracted staff television jobs\, including top showrunners today. \nIn fact\, women represent a higher percentage of our overall alumni success stories—and through the years we’ve awarded nearly half a million dollars in fellowship awards to writers and filmmakers of diverse heritage\, highlighting opportunities for women of color. \nYou can see countless other movie and TV credits by Writers Boot Camp alumni on our A-List Credits page. \nAmong our favorite alumni–a past staff member–writer-director\, Sian Heder\, recently won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for her movie CODA. Other alumni have been nominated for Oscars\, including Josh Singer\, who won for co-writing SPOTLIGHT. Alumnus Cindy Chupack has won two Emmys for her work on Sex and the City and Modern Family. Steven Sater\, a New York Pro Member\, won the Tony Award for Spring Awakening. \nMore recently\, we’ve discovered many more success stories\, including alumni who have written the movies\, TILL (Michael Reilly)\, ON THE COME UP (Kay Oyegun)\, JOE BABY (Todd Samovitz)\, and the showrunners of Lucifer (Jason Ning) and Fear the Walking Dead (Ian Goldberg). \nThe Fellowship Application \nPlease complete only one application per person. Partners working together may apply via separate applications utilizing the same project. Keep every answer to only one single sentence\, including your answers to the four topical questions combined into one four-sentence paragraph. Again\, alumni who have applied to a fellowship in the past six months–or who have won before–are not eligible to win. \nPlease Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute to Apply! \nFellowship Application Deadline: Tuesday\, May 16th\, 5pm\, LA time. \nWe look forward to supporting three dynamic artists and their writing process with us. We appreciate the efforts and applications of all the candidates\, and the staff will follow up with brief notes about their personal expressions and the potential of their project ideas! \nFor information\, call 310 998 1199.

SUMMARY:Nick Tabor at The NewSouth Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Nick Tabor joins us at The NewSouth Bookstore to discuss his new book\, Africatown: America’s Last Slave Ship and the Community It Created. The story focuses on the community founded by enslaved people carried to the Gulf Coast by the Clotilda\, the remains of which were recently discovered. That community was rooted in slavery\, but its people refused to let that be their only identity. In Africatown Yoruba was spoken\, and its residents appointed their own leaders. Today\, those living there battle the effects of pollution from surrounding industry and land developers. Tabor tells an evocative story about an inspirational history tied to this place.

SUMMARY:Women Going Places Fellowship Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Honoring Women’s History\, Writers Boot Camp will award three deserving writers full $2500 scholarships for the Tuesday\, April 18th \n10-Week Basic Training. The fellowship category is the second annual\, as well as another effort to support female-focused stories and women’s voices\, which we highlighted even more since the 2020 pandemic. \nConducted by founder Jeffrey Gordon\, Basic Training will take each writer from idea through a first draft and two rewrites of a TV pilot or movie script–or the foundation of a book or novel–while imparting writing fundamentals. The only prerequisite for eligibility is the availability of 10 hours per week for creative exercises and writing. \nThe short application for this fellowship is free and highlights a few topical questions for writers to articulate personal perspectives and individual experiences of women writers and filmmakers. The expectation for stories is not that they are based on one’s own life but how one’s perspective provides engaging insight. \nApplications will be followed prior to the deadline by a staff member to verify your availability for 10 hours per week to fully participate in Basic Training if selected as a winner. \nWriters Boot Camp has a remarkable track record in support of diverse voices\, including women. In our 33-year history\, a higher percentage of our alumni successes and credits have been by women. \nApplications must be received by 5pm\, LA time\, on Thursday\, April 6th. Only one application will be accepted per writer. For more information and the submission form\, please click the above link or go to writersbootcamp.com. Please note that the Career Survey page is not the Fellowship application page. \nStory & Project Factors to Consider: \n–Do you have a fresh take on a genre or subject that expands upon what’s typically been done and goes beyond cliche? \n–Is there a story that in past iterations has been whitewashed\, sanitized or is now out-of-date? \n–Can the project open our eyes while entertaining us? \nWhile the application is straightforward\, we encourage you not to wait until the last minute. Please keep all answers to a single sentence and consider the distinctions you can make to stand out from the crowd. \nFor more info about Writers Boot Camp you can call 310/998-1199\, check out writersbootcamp.com\, or email jg@writersbootcamp.com

Basha referred to the book as “one of my all-time greatest achievements.” \nHis freelance work has appeared in a wide variety of publications from “Sports Illustrated” to the “Washington Post.” \nShamsi-Basha\, who immigrated to the U.S. from Syria in 1984\, writes full-time as the culture and food columnist for NJ.com and “The Star Ledger” out of New Jersey. The freelance portion will explore “effectively pitching magazines\, publications and websites\,” he said. \nA.W.C. President Jessica Langston said this workshop “should give prospective freelancers some valuable insights to help them in their pursuit of landing writing jobs. It will also help the many writers out there who are hoping to secure agents to get their manuscripts published. We are very pleased to have Karim offering his wealth of knowledge and expertise on both these subjects.” \nThe workshops will be held on Saturday\, March 25 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Zoom session is free\, but A.W.C. membership is required. The fee for annual membership is $25. Visit alabamawriterscooperative.org to become a member\, and to register for the workshops. For additional information regarding Saturday’s events\, please email Langston at jjsayspoetryplz@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tim Spofford at the NewSouth Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Tim Spofford will be our special guest at the bookstore in connection with his new book\, which details a dramatic episode in Black history told in vivid detail for the first time. What the Children Told Us is the biography of Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Phipps Clark\, Harlem psychologists and racial justice pioneers\, who developed a controversial doll test. Using brown and white dolls\, their experiment played a key role in the landmark Supreme Court ruling against segregated school systems in 1954. Today\, Clark dolls are on exhibit at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington\, and at the Brown v. the Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka\, Kansas. What the Children Told Us has garnered many fine reviews. Booklist has this to say about it: “Part biography\, part history\, and part psychological study\, this emotionally charged book chronicles the lives of Kenneth and Mamie Clark as they challenged segregation by studying its effects on Black identity and self-esteem as early as childhood.” Spofford has a doctorate in English and worked for years in classrooms and newsrooms. He’s written for the New York Times\, Newsday\, Mother Jones magazine\, Columbia Journalism Review and other publications.
