SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Contributions Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Apply by Tues. June 27th\, 2023\, 5pm (PST) \nThree Fellowship Awards for LGBTQIA+ Writers & Filmmakers \nYou can apply via the application on our website: \nWriters Boot Camp Fellowship Application. \nWriters Boot Camp continues our support of fresh voices and diverse artists this month by providing three $2500 full scholarships to writers in the Saturday\, July 8th 10-Week Basic Training. \nIn celebration of Pride this month’s theme is LGBTQIA+ Contributions. \nCandidates must self-identify as LGBTQIA+ and submit a project focusing on at least one Main Character presenting within that background and involved in a story with related subject matter. \nWhether writing about personal challenges\, about a relationship or family circumstance\, an historical retrospective or modern take on past events\, a leadership or political issues piece\, or a simply entertaining and engaging project–all formats and genres of TV\, movies\, books\, novels\, and non-fiction can be supported and are welcome. \nWhile in many cases\, audiences can benefit from authentic representation of any kind\, especially in the realm of LGBTQIA+ inclusion\, we encourage all writers to consider how a project idea offers a fresh take and contribution to the “ongoing conversation” to rise above cliche or a more generic approach. Of course\, that’s the key to any idea in the entertainment industry\, which is an idea business. \nOur tools are agnostic in that there is no imposition of bias\, and Writers Boot Camp’s diversity track record through the years is unparalleled. You can read more about the process at writersbootcamp.com and the fellowship application page. \nWriters must verify their availability to write 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the Basic Training process that has supported more than 12\,000 writers and filmmakers over the past 34 years. \nWe encourage all applicants to read about the professional approach in all of Writers Boot Camp’s educational support\, as well as distinctions that have made the learning and productivity environment of our writing groups and individual artists successful through the years. \nWe discourage applying if there’s any risk that winning could prevent another deserving writer from our support in the case that you might drop or not take full advantage of the award after winning. \nWhile we celebrate our anniversary each October\, the first session conducted by founder Jeffrey Gordon (JG ) was in his living room in March 1989 during his last semester of his MFA at USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program. JG currently conducts all Basic Trainings and Pro Membership Project Groups. \nPertinent professional experience combined with cogent answers will complement the project idea to determine the three winners. \nEligibility Notes \nWriters Boot Camp alumni who have applied to a prior fellowship within the past six months–or who have won before–may apply for fun yet are not eligible to win. Winners must confirm their availability to participate in Basic Training\, along with 10 hours per week for creative exercises and writing for 10 weeks without risk of dropping due to outside conflict or work opportunities. Only winners will be notified individually. All non-winners will be notified by email within a few days of the selection of winners. \nPlease complete only one application per person. Partners working together may apply via separate applications utilizing the same project. Keep every answer to only one single sentence\, including your answers to the four topical questions combined into one four-sentence paragraph. \nPlease Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute to Apply! \nFellowship Application Deadline: Tuesday\, June 27th\, 5pm\, LA time. \nWe look forward to supporting three dynamic artists and their writing process with us. We appreciate the efforts and applications of all the candidates\, and the staff will follow up with brief notes about their personal expressions and the potential of their project ideas! \nFor information\, call 310 998 1199.

SUMMARY:May 18th Mini-Camp: Free Script Evaluation from Writers Boot Camp
DESCRIPTION:Normally reserved for our Professional Members\, we are opening up this Mini-Camp to friends and colleagues in solidarity of the Writers Guild of America–and all entertainment industry union members! Fight On!! \nThursday\, 5/18\, 4-5pm\, LA Time \nMini-Camp: Free Script Evaluation \nTools to Make Your Best Script Stronger \nwith Founder Jeffrey Gordon \nWe invite you to enjoy a free Mini-Camp with Writers Boot Camp Founder Jeffrey Gordon on the topic of…Free Script Evaluation. We’ll review the most Common First Draft Problems\, and deploy a checklist of tools and tests to help free you from the need for outside script evaluation\, which will also pre-empt the tendency to rush your material out to market. \nWhile Writers Boot Camp’s unique support includes script evaluation and conferencing as part of the 10-Week Basic Training and all levels of Professional Membership\, there are certain threshold creative issues that newer writers will benefit from understanding about the nature of early stages of writing and project development. After all\, screenwriting is a profession–and while many ideas do spring forth from one’s personal life\, the curation of entertainment is a craft. \nLinked to our mission of dispelling fallacies to accelerate careers is the philosophy of freeing our alumni from insecurity about their own work and the unwitting abdication of creative authority. While it can be very natural to lose objectivity about one’s work from the outset and during various stages of rewriting\, Writers Boot Camp provides tools for artist empowerment and methods of breaking down the work into more manageable exercises and stages\, especially during rewriting. \nMany respectable and respected colleagues run companies offering script evaluation services\, though we don’t abide or encourage the need for writers to pay extra for script evaluation. Our Professional Membership offers the free\, ongoing benefit of script evaluation\, along with a constructively directed reinforcement of a method to gradually wean writers off that dependency. \nOf course\, an earnest and capable practitioner may offer insight that can be justified for the few hundred bucks. But the general lack of experience and education by new writers can render the most insightful commentary superfluous to a writer’s current capacity to integrate notes\, let alone at the right stage of the writing and rewriting process. More profoundly\, a writer is the presumed expert of their material\, so it’s not great form. \nThe insight of a veteran executive or producer who’s willing to take time to be supportive with insight about commercial viability and creative notes can be perceived as a golden ticket. Too often\, however\, screenwriters impose on their friends in the business by submitting early drafts of scripts that are premature to evaluate–unless the ultimate bottom line is whether the idea has merit in the first place and\, in that case\, why impose at all? \nThe comments of the best facilitator can be lost by the inevitable need for multiple drafts\, as well as negated by the editorial stance of an executive and their company’s business model. \nThat’s why we teach tools for development and why our Professional Members learn dozens of unique rewriting exercises\, as well as development tools applicable to the many stages it takes for your script to merit submission. \nYou can email jg@writersbootcamp.com with questions about the next 10-Week Basic Training or the benefits of Pro Membership. \nWe always appreciate hearing personal news and breakthroughs\, and recent film and TV credits\, as well as achievements in book publishing by alumni.

SUMMARY:Reading at NewSouth Books: Unmasking the Klansman: The Double Life of Asa and Forrest Carter
DESCRIPTION:The fascinating double identity of Asa Carter is a subject of Dan Carter’s newest book\, Unmasking the Klansman: The Double Life of Asa and Forrest Carter\, new from NewSouth Books. A distinguished Southern historian\, Dan Carter (no relation) has spent decades researching his subject\, who was a secret advisor to George Wallace in the 1960s and wrote his famous “Segregation now\, Segregation Forever” speech. Asa Carter disappeared from Alabama in the ‘70s and resurfaced as a Cherokee author in Abilene\, Texas\, writing under the name Forrest Carter. Curiously\, he went on to author the sensitively told The Education of Little Tree\, which became a bestseller. The unbelievable story Carter’s life and activities is conveyed with vigor and insight in Unmasking the Klansman. It practically guarantees that Dan Carter’s bookstore talk will be every bit as interesting.

SUMMARY:Asian American Pacific Islander Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Tell Us About AAPI Contributions to American Life \nApply by Tues. May 16th\, 2023\, 5pm (PST) \nThree Fellowship Awards for AAPI Writers & Filmmakers \nYou can apply via the application on our website: Writers Boot Camp AAPI Fellowship Application. \nWriters Boot Camp continues our support of fresh voices this month by providing three $2500 full scholarships to writers in the Thursday\, May 25th Basic Training. \nCandidates must verify their availabity to write 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the Basic Training process that has supported more than 12\,000 writers and filmmakers over the past 33 years. While we celebrate our anniversary each October\, the first session conducted by JG was in his living room in March 1989 during his last semester of his MFA at USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program. \nThis month’s theme of “AAPI Contributions III” is our third offering in this category of creative material that supports the voices of artists\, writers\, and filmmakers with Asian American Pacific Islander heritage. \nWhether you’re writing a family story\, one about an unheralded individual in leadership or American history\, a genre with specific thematic significance\, or profound change and artistic achievement of AAPI people and subjects–this theme’s creative parameters are otherwise unlimited. The only project requirements are AAPI lead characters and subject matter. \nOur Remarkable Track Record and Diversity Emphasis \nThere are few places in society for artists to seek and receive personal support. No one does what we do and with as much depth of process. Writers Boot Camp’s tools are meant to empower your own authority. The tools and materials are more a language for collaboration and for describing your creative goals than a formula to fit your story. \nWriters Boot Camp’s remarkable success of supporting diversity and a range of creative voices is unparalleled in the business. Over the nine years Fox Diversity sponsored writers through Basic Training\, 50% of the writers attracted staff television jobs\, including top showrunners today. \nIn fact\, women represent a higher percentage of our overall alumni success stories—and through the years we’ve awarded nearly half a million dollars in fellowship awards to writers and filmmakers of diverse heritage\, highlighting opportunities for women of color. \nYou can see countless other movie and TV credits by Writers Boot Camp alumni on our A-List Credits page. \nAmong our favorite alumni–a past staff member–writer-director\, Sian Heder\, recently won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for her movie CODA. Other alumni have been nominated for Oscars\, including Josh Singer\, who won for co-writing SPOTLIGHT. Alumnus Cindy Chupack has won two Emmys for her work on Sex and the City and Modern Family. Steven Sater\, a New York Pro Member\, won the Tony Award for Spring Awakening. \nMore recently\, we’ve discovered many more success stories\, including alumni who have written the movies\, TILL (Michael Reilly)\, ON THE COME UP (Kay Oyegun)\, JOE BABY (Todd Samovitz)\, and the showrunners of Lucifer (Jason Ning) and Fear the Walking Dead (Ian Goldberg). \nThe Fellowship Application \nPlease complete only one application per person. Partners working together may apply via separate applications utilizing the same project. Keep every answer to only one single sentence\, including your answers to the four topical questions combined into one four-sentence paragraph. Again\, alumni who have applied to a fellowship in the past six months–or who have won before–are not eligible to win. \nPlease Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute to Apply! \nFellowship Application Deadline: Tuesday\, May 16th\, 5pm\, LA time. \nWe look forward to supporting three dynamic artists and their writing process with us. We appreciate the efforts and applications of all the candidates\, and the staff will follow up with brief notes about their personal expressions and the potential of their project ideas! \nFor information\, call 310 998 1199.
