SUMMARY:Judith Resnik visits for a talk about her magisterial new book\, Impermissible Punishments
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome legal scholar Judith Resnik for a talk about her new book\, Impermissible Punishments\, a history of the invention of the corrections profession and of ensuing debates about punishment’s purposes and prisoners’ rights. The work explores the history of punishment inside prisons and how governments grappled with obligations to justify the punishments they impose. Hers is an incisive examination of incarceration as a deeply flawed institution in tension with modern democracy. Don’t miss this special event on Thursday\, October 1 at 4pm. (Please note the earlier event start time.)

SUMMARY:An Afternoon with Lagniappe's Kevin Lee: Book Signing & In-conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 11\, 2026\, at 5pm at The Haunted Book Shop for an evening with Lagniappe’s Kevin Lee to celebrate his book Sinners Above All Others: Seedy and Sordid Tales from Mobile’s Underbelly. With a book signing and in-conversation\, Kevin and guests will explore the darker side of Mobile through its most notorious crimes\, as detailed in Lee’s comprehensive collection. \nSinners Above All Others includes expanded accounts of Mobile’s most infamous crimes\, originally chronicled by Lagniappe over the past two decades. Starting from the early misdemeanors of the Le Moyne brothers to heinous acts that marked the 20th century\, this book paints a vivid picture of the intrigues and societal undercurrents that shaped Mobile. Each chapter\, whether it’s the tale of the 1923 Whiskey Ring\, the arrest of a Manson Family member here in Mobile\, the bizarre life of serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin\, or other infamous crimes\, sheds light on the profound impact these events had on the community and the historical fabric of the city. \nAttendees will have the chance to engage directly with Kevin Lee\, gaining insights into his research and writing process\, and perhaps discussing the fascinating crimes themselves. Following the discussion\, there will be a book signing session. This event is a must-attend for true crime enthusiasts\, history buffs\, and anyone intrigued by the stories that lurk in the shadows of Mobile’s past. \nJoin us on October 11th to meet longtime Lagniappe contributor and reporter Kevin Lee and grab your own signed copy of Sinners Above All Others: Seedy and Sordid Tales from Mobile’s Underbelly.

SUMMARY:Kevin Morris talk on An American Problem
DESCRIPTION:Kevin T. Morris is senior research fellow and voting policy scholar at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. On Tuesday\, October 13 at 5:30pm\, he’ll be our special guest for a talk about An American Problem: How the Country Built — and the Supreme Court Broke — the Voting Rights Act. His new book\, coauthored with Michael G. Miller\, is a tour-de-force of investigative reporting and storytelling. Importantly\, the book traces the rise and fall of the Voting Rights Act\, from the triumph of its passage in 1965 to its evisceration by the Supreme Court in their 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder. Morris will be in conversation with the Legal Director of the ACLU of Alabama\, Alison Mollman. Don’t miss his talk which will offer insights and answers to your questions about where we go from here. Make note: We are offsite for this program at the Rosa Parks Museum Children’s Wing 2nd floor. See you there!
